Pauntley Court

"A place of great beauty and strangeness" - John Masefield, Poet Laureate. Believed to be the birthplace of Dick Whittington, Pauntley Court is magical, quite the most romantic and luxurious bed and breakfast home. Steeped in history, boasting its own dovecote, mill house, Norman church and trout pond, and set in a valley of unimaginable beauty with views towards the distant Cotswold hills, Pauntley Court offers guests an opportunity to stay in a place of rare beauty, high romance and utter tranquillity.

Your Hosts

Having taken over the house from her mother, who created the breathtaking formal gardens, Melissa, her husband, Mark and their three children (now at boarding school) have lived at Pauntley Court since 2008.  With ponies, Flotsam and Jetsam, the Kune Kune pigs , chickens,  Batman the cat, and Wilma the terrier, this is a quintessential English family home with a difference. Melissa has thought of everything to ensure the most luxurious stay.

Accommodation

A half-timbered house, part medieval, part Elizabethan and with an early 18th Century addition, Pauntley Court is now painted a pinkish earth colour, reflecting the iron-rich soil of the area. Wrapped around a central courtyard and surrounded by a series of fascinating formal gardens, the house glows in the evening sun, surrounded by tranquil meadows filled with cows and sheep.

The romantically named bedroom suites, Dick Whittington and John Masefield, are in the 18th Century part of the house, filled with light and with views of the surrounding gardens and valley below.

  • Spacious, light filled and luxurious - the two gorgeous bedrooms, each with super king size beds (can be twins on request) and ensuite bathrooms, are named after remarkable figures in the house's history. Both look out over the ‘ruin garden’ and surrounding countryside beyond
  • Choose from Dick Whittington, delightful, light, high-ceilinged room decorated in a colourful English country house style. Fabulous sheets, a blissfully comfortable super king-sized bed and peaceful surroundings will ensure a fabulous night's sleep. With a large walk-in shower, the ensuite bathroom offers high quality Neal’s Yard bath products and a selection of luxurious towels and dressing gowns
  • Or John Masefield, classically decorated in creams and toile de jouy. A beautiful room with its sweeping long curtains and marble fireplace, the highest quality bed linen, super king-sized bed and tranquil setting. The newly created ensuite bathroom has a west facing window which fills the room with evening sunlight, a shower over a bath and underfloor heating to keep you snug and cosy in the winter
  • Both bedroom suites have all the mod cons you can imagine - Nespresso coffee machines, slim Freeview televisions, Roberts DAB radios and wifi access
  • On arrival, be welcomed into the beautiful hallway with painted ceiling, and take afternoon tea in front of a roaring fire, in winter, in the drawing room
  • Take a stroll down to the mill pond or, on request, take a rod and catch a trout or two
  • Introduce yourselves to Flotsam and Jetsam, the family's Kune Kune pigs - they love having their backs scratched
  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the ballroom and gaze across the lawns and beyond to the unspoilt Leadon valley
  • Relax on the comfortable sofa in the ballroom, play a tune on the grand piano or, with two sets of french doors out into the garden in summer, stroll around the wonderful lawns and sunken garden
  • Bring your racket and have a game of tennis on a private and secluded court
  • Treat yourself to a relaxing massage from a local therapist - please enquire upon booking
  • If all the effort is too much, enjoy a delicious cooked evening meal in the ballroom (request on booking)

Food and Drink

Inhouse cuisine: Breakfast is entirely at the guests’ discretion – full English breakfast with locally sourced bacon and sausages, homelaid eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms, porridge, a choice of cereals, natural yoghurt, homemade jams and marmalades, fresh fruit and fruit juice, toast.  Pauntley Courts' profusion of fruit trees also produce some exotic options for 'juice of the day'.

With advance notice, Melissa is able to offer evening meals. A simple but delicious home-cooked supper, such as a luxury fish pie or chicken pie followed by bread and butter pudding or apple & blackberry crumble, will be served to you in the ballroom. (2 courses at £35 per head or 2 courses & a cheese board at £40 per head.)

Eating out: With a Michelin starred pub only six miles away and a choice of dining options in Ledbury, Melissa will be delighted to recommend and even book you a taxi to take you there and back.
