Montréal

Perched on a hill overlooking the Serein valley, Montréal has a charm all of its own. As you pass through the medieval gateway, up the steep main street, the beautifully preserved houses from the 14th to 16th Centuries tower over you; some have turrets, others, outside stone staircases and small courtyards. This is a favourite haunt of Parisians who have second homes here and the pride in the village is obvious.

Right at the top, overlooking a 180 degree view, is the Church of Notre Dame, restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th Centure. The second of the old gateways is here too, a reminder of the turbulent times that this fortified village has seen.

Burgundy & Franche-Comté

Burgundy considers itself the heart of France, a prosperous region with world-renowned wine, earthy but excellent cuisine and magnificent architecture. Franche-Comté to the east combines gentle farmland with lofty Alpine forests.  Add the plethora of world-class wineries to some of France’s most gorgeous countryside and you have the recipe for a perfect tour of Burgundy.

Bungundy’s vignerons (winegrowers) only have small vineyards, rarely more than 10 hectares, and they produce small quantities of very good wine. Burgundy reds are made with pinot noir grapes and the best vintages demand 10 to 20 years to age; whites are made with chardonnay. The region’s most famous wine route, the Route des Grands Crus, and its often narrow variants wend their way between stone-built villages and steeple-topped churches or the turrets of a chateau peeping above the trees.

We've hand-picked the very best boutique and luxury bed and breakfasts in Europe to bring you our collection of stylish romantic retreats. Find your perfect bed and breakfast and get the low-down on all the things you can do and places you can visit whilst you are there.
