The Glove House

A beautiful Georgian townhouse located in the centre of Woodstock, on the edge of the Cotswolds and 7 miles from Oxford, The Glove House is about 400 years old. Used as a glove workshop in the 1870′s, Christopher Daggett was one of Woodstock’s largest glove manufacturers. Whilst there is little sign of glove-making today, the house has a wonderful sense of history; its oak paneled reception hall with open fire place and its spacious bedroom suites have no doubt borne witness to many a tale.

Your Hosts

A disaffected engineer who has long been drawn to the world of luxury hospitality, Francesco, an Italian, and Caroline, who combines a City job with a return to her Cotswold roots, are your hosts at The Glove House. They have lavished attention and their impeccable taste on this very beautiful Georgian home which exudes peace and quiet, and offers guests every luxurious comfort and a true escape from the busy world outside.

Accommodation

Choose from one of three boutique, chic and incredibly spacious suites. Subtle Farrow & Ball wall colours, wonderfully comfortable beds with pocket sprung mattresses, luxurious duvets and pillows, expensive white linens and beautiful soft furnishings are just part of this boutique bed and breakfast in historic Woodstock.

  • Situated at the back of the house and overlooking the rooftops of Woodstock, The Bladon Room exudes peace and calm. With super king size (or twin) bed and 3500 pocket sprung mattress, charming seating area and the perfect chaise longue for a quiet read, the Bladon Room is beautifully decorated, furnished with an antique Biedermeier wardrobe and original works of art, and has its own large en suite bathroom with impressive shower, claw footed bath, double basin and underfloor heating
  • Unusually spacious, the Woodstock Suite is a lovely, quiet set of rooms with original wooden beams, overlooking the garden of The Glove House. With a king size bed in the main room and 3500 pocket sprung mattress, there is a mahogany day bed in the adjoining small sitting room, which can be used as a third bed. The en suite bathroom has a bath, and overhead shower, as well as an antique cabinet containing our specially sourced range of bath products. With its charming sitting room, the Woodstock Suite has a large built in wardrobe, and plenty of shelves with a selection of books from art to sport and travel. Original works of art hang on the walls of this beautifully decorated suite
  • The Charlbury Suite sits at the top of the house and exudes Zoffany glamour in duck egg blues and soft turquoise velvets. With super king size bed (or twin) in the main room and 3500 pocket sprung mattress, spacious sitting room, with a four poster day bed for a third person, and uber fashionable, William Holland copper and nickel bath on a spot lit platform and en suite shower room, the Charlbury Suite is the ultimate in indulgent luxury
  • All of the rooms and suites feature a 26" LED TV (the Charlbury Suite has a 32" LED TV) with DVD player, WiFi, Ethernet connection, Pure clock radio with iPod docking station, luxurious bath products, a Nespresso machine, and tea making facilities
  • Step from the bustling street into a truly beautiful Georgian home and be welcomed into the wood panelled guest living room with a roaring fire in the grate in winter months
  • Relax in front of the fire, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and plan your expeditions from a perfectly located boutique bed and breakfast on the edge of the Cotswolds
  • Take a leisurely breakfast in the elegant dining room and perhaps have a tinkle on the upright piano
  • In the summer months, breakfast will be served in the gorgeous walled garden at the back of the house
  • Enjoy a balmy summer's evening before heading out for dinner and share a glass of prosecco in the garden - heavenly

Food and Drink

In house cuisine: Served in the elegant dining room, the breakfast menu changes with the seasons, but will always include freshly-squeezed orange juice, free range and locally sourced produce for a cooked breakfast, and homemade granola, fruit compotes and Bircher muesli.  For a change, try Francesco's 'strapazzate' eggs (scrambled eggs with parmesan and cream!).  Tea and cake are offered on arrival or a glass of Prosecco and nibbles if you prefer.

Eating out: There are at least a dozen places to eat within a few hundred metres of The Glove House. These range from tearooms to Mediterranean and most things inbetween. A great emphasis is placed on using locally sourced produce. If you would like to go further afield to eat, there are plenty of gastropubs and lovely restaurants to choose from. We are very happy to make recommendations and reservations for you.

Location

Woodstock

Described in the Domesday Book as a royal forest, Woodstock is more famously known as the home of Blenheim Palace, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Blenheim Palace was built in the early 18th Century to celebrate the victory over the French in the War of the Spanish Succession and as a gift to the First Duke of Marlborough - the military commander who led the Allied forces in the Battle of Blenheim on 13th August 1704.

Only seven miles from Oxford, Woodstock is a fine Georgian town with a distinct Royal heritage, containing many attractive period buildings: the 18th Century Town Hall; the Church of St Mary Magdalene with its Norman doorway, early English windows and a musical clock, which plays tunes hourly.

  • pend a day at historic Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and one of England's finest 'royal' palaces
  • A stroll around the stunning landscapes of Blenheim Park makes for one of the finest walks in Oxfordshire and beyond
  • Visit Oxford, city of dreaming spires and the world's smallest cathedral, and enjoy one of the fabulous exhibitions at the famous, and recently restored, Ashmolean Museum
  • Tour the Cotswolds, a region of outstanding natural beauty, wonderful honey-coloured towns and villages with rich and extraordinary histories, breathtaking houses and gardens to visit and some of the most beautiful walking
  • Go shopping - explore the lovely shops of Burford, Stow on the Wold, Broadway and Chipping Campden, or even the designer experience at famous Bicester Village
  • Visit Rousham House and Garden - one of the finest examples of the first phase of English landscape design with many of its 18th Century features unaltered over time
  • If you are an afficionado of the Arts and Crafts movement, visit Kelmscott Manor, summer home of William Morris and housing an outstanding collection of the possessions and works of Morris, his family and associates, including furniture, original textiles, pictures, carpets, ceramics and metalwork
