Located in the heart of the Northumberland National Park and with grounds designed by Capability Brown, Hesleyside is a magnificent and historic house which is now home to William and Anna Charlton and their family. The ancestral home of the Border Reiver Charlton family since 1343, the land at Hesleyside (from the original pele tower to today's magnificent 18th Century home) has been continuously inhabited by the same family, in an unbroken line, since the reign of Richard the Lionheart.

Your Hosts

Since moving into Hesleyside in 2011, William and Anna have undertaken a major renovation to bring this historic house to the height of luxury in country house bed and breakfast. Heated with wood-chip from the estate woods, all guest bedrooms have been fully restored to the highest standards of luxury and a new Library created where guests can enjoy the papers or an evening drink around a roaring fire, whilst enjoying the atmosphere of this historic family home.

Hesleyside and the surrounding area are steeped in history and the remains of stone built fortified farmhouses, called bastles, of the Reiving (cattle rustling) days can be visited through the local Tarset Bastle Trail. Set within the breathtakingly beautiful Northumberland National Park, the largest International Dark Sky Park in Europe, Hesleyside is a perfect place from which to explore the history of this wild Border country with Hadrians Wall only a few miles away. Stargazing is obligatory.

  • Visit Hexham, one of Northumberland's most beautiful and historic market towns, and its eponymous Hexham Abbey, with its spectacular interior and monastic relics
  • Take a tour of magnificent Cragside House, former home of the famous inventor, Lord William Armstrong (1810-1900 of Vickers-Armstrong fame) and, in 1878, the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity, powered by generators on the estate
  • Experience Chipchase Castle, a 17th Century Jacobean mansion incorporating a substantial 14th Century pele tower which stands north of Hadrian’s Wall
  • Follow Hadrian's Wall as it runs through an often wild landscape, witness the stunning views, explore natural wilderness and become immersed in the history while visiting Hadrian’s Wall and Housesteads Fort
  • Visit Kielder Water & Forest Park. The views are bigger, the night sky brighter, the sports wilder and the smiles wider. Kielder is also home to the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe and, at over 250 square miles, the largest working forest in England
  • Walk the Pennine Way National Trail, amongst the finest upland walking in England, which stretches 268 miles, taking in several counties as it winds its way west
