North Wing at Combermere Abbey

A complex of medieval and 16th Century buildings with extensive Gothic enveloping (of the early 19th Century), Combermere Abbey began as a Cistercian monastery founded in 1133 by Hugh de Malbanc, Lord of Nantwich. It sits overlooking a 143 acre lake (mere) and gentle rolling parkland filled with ancient oaks on the Cheshire/Shropshire border.

A major 28-month restoration project has restored the historic North Wing of the Abbey to its former glory. Uninhabited since the early 1950s, beneath the North Wing’s gothic exterior cladding, the building had become structurally unstable, seriously endangering the rest of Combermere Abbey - one of only a few privately owned Grade I listed buildings. To compliment the rich architectural history of the North Wing, renowned interior designer, Nina Campbell, was invited to bring her inimitable style and sensitivity to the restoration project. To stay at the North Wing of Combermere Abbey, history, romance and exquisite style combine to offer guests a rare and extraordinarily glamorous experience.
