Your Hosts

French born, British-raised Alex opened Maison Lambot Luxury B&B in a sensitively-renovated 18th Century mansion, after leaving the corporate world behind.  Having worked and travelled all over the world, from New York to Berlin, Lyon to Moscow, he was inspired to offer access to the best of his beloved Provence region, coupled with impeccable British-style guest service, in a luxurious, historic B&B.  Passionate about Provence, its people, food, wine, and landscape, Alex crafts his guests' experiences around a deep knowledge of Provençal life and traditions.  His motivation is to enable his guests to discover the local secrets and unique delights that he himself sought out when travelling the world.  He runs Maison Lambot Luxury B&B with his wife, Katrina, a successful artist, and their mission is to help their guests to fall as deeply in love with Provence as they did.

Location

Montfort-sur-Argens

Montfort-sur-Argens is a medieval templar village, with fantastic architecture and a vibrant cultural life. As well as its beautiful surrounding countryside, Montfort-sur-Argens has a rich history and surviving ancient architecture. The history of Montfort means there is plenty to discover right on the doorstep.

The fortified settlement of Montfort was founded in the Middle Ages. It was given to the Templar order by the Lord of Ponteves in 1197, and passed on to the Knights Templar in 1207 by Alphonse II of Provence. Thirteenth century archives refer to the village as ‘Mons Fortis’, meaning ‘fortified hill’. The Mons Fortis plaque featuring a canon on a hilltop can be spotted on various buildings including Maison Lambot. The village was renamed Montfort-sur-Argens in 1904 (‘Monfouar’ in Provençal, the local dialect). During the crusades, Montfort was used extensively by the warrior monks. After the disappearance of the Templars in 1308, Montfort was destroyed by the Order of Saint-John of Jerusalem, who took it over in 1319. During the revolutionary period In 1411, the Order built a fortified domain at Montfort, which they occupied until the revolution. In 1793, the castle was turned into a revolutionary prison. The key historical sights in Montfort include the Château des Commandeurs dating from 1411, the Tour de l’orloge (clock tower) dating from 1679, and the 13th Century ‘Porte a Herse’ (portcullis gate). The old town features remains of the ramparts, fountains and vaulted passageways.

  • Enjoy a spectacular walk through the Caramy Gorge departing from the village of Tourves and leading to the isolated, splendidly situated chapel of St Probace
  • Take a day trip to the historic Abbey of Thoronet, the "jewel" of Cistercian abbeys. Built between 1160 and 1230, the Thoronet Abbey, together with Silvacane and Sénanque, is one of three Cistercian abbeys in Provence
  • Visit Aups in the Upper Var region and towards the northern edge of the Cotes de Provence wine region. It is a short distance south of the popular and scenic Gorges du Verdon. Another of the (many) pretty hilltop villages to be found in Provence, Aups is a pleasure to explore with every corner in the narrow streets revealing new fountains and sundials, small squares and cafes, shady trees. The village is in a pretty setting on the edge of a plateau, with the remains of a medieval castle standing above the village
  • Take a trip to the coast and admire the fabulous yachts that adorn the historic harbour at glamorous St Tropez, less than 70km away
  • Provence is scattered with beautiful medieval hill towns with vibrant markets and historic centres - explore
  • Go fishing - the possibilities are endless from river fishing on the Caramy and Argens to night fishing for carp on the Lac de Carces
  • Just ten minutes away is Cotignac, home to home one of Provence’s best known/ most popular markets every Tuesday morning
