Casa Colleverde

Perfectly situated, high in the hills, near the border between Liguria and Tuscany, visitors to Casa Colleverde can make the most of both regions with not only the Cinque Terre, Versilia, Genoa, Florence, Pisa and Lucca on the door step; but also the less well known areas of the Lunigiana and Garfagnana. There are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing or other activities from golf to horse-riding; and even cookery classes can be arranged. Built in the 1970s, Casa Colleverde has been transformed into a contemporary, light-filled home with views to die for and an exquisite infinity pool to relax by.

Your Hosts

An English expat Italophile with a particular interest in Italian food, cooking and design, Simon has been living in Italy for over 10 years. A landscape designer, he originally came to Italy (Arezzo) to set up and run a boutique hotel and villa rental business in Tuscany 12 years ago with some friends.  The hotel and villa rental business is still going strong whilst Simon is now running this fabulous boutique bed and breakfast on the coast in Liguria with his partner, Carmelo.

Born in the coastal town of Sciacca, Carmelo studied in Restuarant/Hotel School in Sicily and then left to work in Bologna for 10 years. Carmelo brings his own warm Sicilian personality to Casa Colleverde where his Sicilan charm and broken English make guests feel relaxed and at home.

Location

Castelnuovo Magra

Castelnuovo Magra is a small commune and town located in the region of Liguria in Italy in the province of La Spezia. The town is located close to the cities of La Spezia and Genoa. Castelnuovo Magra is spread over an area of 14 sq km and has a population close to 8,000. The commune is made up of four small subdivisions and villages. Castelnuovo Magra is located on Mount Bastion with stunning views of the neighboring landscape and the gulf. The town was first documented in the 12th Century for its rich history and art, the palazzo of Cornelius Ingolotti, built in the 18th Century, and its ancient castle.

  • Explore the Cinque Terre, five self-contained villages located on the rocky coastline of the Riviera di Levante. Clinging dramatically to the steep cliffs, these villages are linked only by an ancient footpath known as the Sentiero Azzurro which offers spectacular views of the rocky coastlines and terraced vineyards that produce the local white wine
  • A vast and beautiful monument to the Renaissance, Florence is testament to the artistic and cultural reawakening of the 15th Century.  Explore Florence's historic centre which is remarkably compact and the majority of its principal sights can be reached on foot. Head for the Duomo, explore the Campanile, Baptistry and Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and don't miss the Uffizi, one of Italy's leading art galleries
  • Head for the hedonistic coastline of Versilia, named after its river, but a destination that has the sea at its heart. Celebrities have been lured to its beaches since Shelley and Byron first donned bathing suits and dipped their toes in Tuscan waters
  • Head to rough-edged, Genoa is Italy's most important commercial port. The narrow streets of the old town are the haunts of sailors and streetwalkers. But visitors are well-rewarded when they explore Genoa - a city proud of its history and legends
  • Once a maritime power to rival Genoa and Venice, Pisa now draws its fame from an architectural project gone terribly wrong. But the world-famous Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy sights in this compelling city
  • Lucca is one of those Tuscan towns you should visit on your vacation in Italy. Famous for its Renaissance-era city walls that have remained intact while so many other Tuscan towns saw theirs destroyed in past centuries
  • Famed for its flawless white marble, the Carrara region's 300 or more quarries date back to Roman times, making this one of the oldest industrial sites in the world. Many of the town's marble sawmills and workshops welcome visitors, offering them the ways in which marble and quartz are worked
  • Explore the less well known but exquisitely beautiful region of Garfagnana with its heavenly villages and verdant valleys
  • A relatively unexplored part of northern Tuscany and eastern Liguria, the Lunigiana is a land rich in history and things to do: fascinating castles, Romanesque churches, medieval villages and streets, prehistoric stele statues, ancient pathways of the Via Francigena and refined works of art dating from different centuries. It’s a territory to be explored slowly, taking your time to appreciate every single nuance, savouring the local food, such as testaroli, panigacci, chestnut flour, honey, olive oil, wines, cured meats and cheeses. There are many towns worth visiting in Lunigiana including Pontremoli, Filattiera, Bagnone and Villafranca in Lunigiana.
  • If golf is more your thing or you want to ride in the surrounding countryside, the possibilities are endless
