Fattoria San Martino

Sitting at the end of a track surrounded by wild roses, lavender and birds, Fattoria San Martino is soft ochre-hued fattoria (farmhouse), restored with earth-tone pigments and wrapped around by an enchanting garden with a lily pond pool in which to cool off.  Inside is special. Expect limewash, wood, beeswax and stone; feast on the simplicity, indulge the senses. The feel is rustic, creative, eclectic, inventive. Bedrooms  all have with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and electric current disjoiners that come into play as soon as the last light is turned off. Beds are positioned according to electromagnetic fields to ensure the deepest slumber.

Fattoria San Martino is not just a place for an overnight stay. It’s a place to discover, to experience, to taste. It is strongly linked to nature and to the senses and therefore it is very different from the classic hotel experience. It does not offer hotel services but its very own, individual hospitality that comes from the heart.

Your Hosts

Dutch-born designer, Karin, and marketing guru, Antonio, quit workaholic city lives in Milan to move to tantalising Tuscany in 1990. They have created a magical place, minutes from the centre of the historic hill town of Montepulciano, with breathtaking views of morning mists over rolling hills and valleys. Their philosophy is living at one with nature. Antonio is a skilled and passionate “ambassador” of green thinking and organic farming. A little talk in the garden, the stables or on the fields of Fattoria San Martino will give you deeper and inspiring insights on a healthy relationship between man and nature. Heavenly.

Accommodation

The beatiful bedrooms are very spacious, flooded with light and entirely decorated with natural and recycled materials to hold the environmental impact as low as possible and to live in harmony with the land that surrounds us.

Food and Drink

Inhouse Cuisine: Enjoy breakfast of fruits, muesli, yoghurt, honey, bread and jams. Much of the food served is homegrown, organic and self-sustaining.  Enjoy lunch or dinner too in the large refurbished dining room served from the property's very own vegetarian and vegan restaurant, "Al N3 Cucina di Verdure": The land in Montepulciano was turned over to biodynamic, organic farming; raising our crops in ways that are, like nature, self-sustaining. Fattoria San Martino specialises in what is organic, fresh, seasonal and local: vegetables, fresh from our kitchen garden; award-winning handmade cheeses from local organic Creamery; breads, pasta and cakes by hands, organic wine and beer.

If dinner is taken in the restaurant, food is served up at a long wood table below antique chandeliers or, when the weather is nice, outdoor tables where you can enjoy the view of the old medieval town.

Eating Out: If you don't wish to dine in the restaurant at Fattoria San Martino, Karin and Antonio can recommend some good local restaurants in Montepulciano, serving hearty Tuscan food.

Location

Montepulciano

One of the most compelling of Tuscany's medieval hill towns, Montepulciano has one of the most intact and architecturally unified historic centres of any town in Italy and, of course, its famously full bodied red wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Standing high atop a hill in southern Tuscany not too far from Siena, Montepulciano is a medieval town of rare beauty highly recommended visiting in Tuscany. The city, full of elegant Renaissance palaces, ancient churches, charming squares and hidden corners, boasts vast panoramas all over the wonderful Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana valleys that surround it.

Montepulciano's strategic position makes it a perfect base from which to explore this beautiful corner of Tuscany; from here, you can reach the charming Pienza, the thermal village of Bagno Vignoni, the famous Montalcino and a lot of other enchanting villages in a very short time.

Piazza Grande is the heart of Montepulciano and the setting for its main events, including the barrel-racing Bravio delle Botti contest held in August every year and much more. A walk through Montepulciano is the best way to view the town and its beautiful landmarks as well as enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside covered by vineyards producing the famous Nobile!

  • Less than an hour and a half from Seggiano is Siena, perfect for a full day trip.  Any exploration of Siena should start with its historic centre, the Piazza del Campo and the surrounding maze of medieval alleys
  • Explore Montalcino, another hilltop village which sits at the heart of vineyards that produce Brunello, one of Italy's finest red wines. You can sample it in the Enoteca (wine shop), situated in the 14th Century Fortezza with its impressive ramparts
  • Only 9km away from Montalcino is the wondrous Abbey of Sant'Antimo, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Italy
  • Visit Pienza, a delightful village whose intimate centre was almost completely redesigned by Pope Pius in the 15th Century
  • A trip to Pitigliano is a must.  A stunning medieval town in the Maremma of Tuscany, Pitigliano is dramatically perched atop a tufa ridge. Etruscan tombs dot the cliff face and valley. Pitigliano is also known as Piccola Gerusalemme, or Little Jerusalem
