A farming landscape, the Yorkshire Dales is formed of three prinicipal dales, Swaledale, Wharfedale and Wensleydale, and a number of smaller ones. The Ice Age helped carve out these steep-sided valleys, which contrast dramatically with the high moorlands. Famed for its beautiful walking, the Yorkshire Dales were designated a national park in 1954. The main point of entry to Swaledale is the medieval market town of Richmond, a perfect staging place for the Coast to Coast Path.
